A Dorm To Remember

[Day 9 of New Years Countdown]

Hey Humans!
I’m currently a University student living on my own in a small dorm. I have the most ridiculous amount of stuff for a very small space. My most crazy never regrettable purchase is a mini oven. It makes everything so much easier rather than having myself go down from the 4th floor to a very dirty kitchen with no oven! Anyways, I will show you some ideas of storing all those stuff in such a small space and re-decorating your room into something fresher. I have also attached a video below of my ‘Dorm Tour’.

The most important thing is find everything a place. No matter how small your room is, everything has a place as long as you find one. At first when I moved here I was only given a wardrobe, a work table, and a bed. Now I still use everything they provided, but I bought 2 Ikea Billy shelves (link) that puts in all my stuff and makes everything neat. This spot is like a mini kitchen in my room. I prepare all my food here and I put my mini oven on top of the shelf.

DSC09895color.JPGTo keep everything in place, find storage boxes for every little things. I have small boxes  from Ikea (link), and this keeps all my techs, arts and crafts, just so everything doesn’t scatter around. Same goes for all you beauty lovers out there with a lot of products; find small storage’s to keep everything in place.

When everything has a place, you want to make things look nice, clean, and simple as possible. Cover every mess, because it is a small space. White works with everything!!! Cover with a curtain, a tablecloth, or even use that scarf you never use.

After that, decorate all you want around your walls. Don’t go too much because it will make your room seem small (that’s what I did before). I put some fairy lights on my wall, with some photos for me to look at everyday.

I hope you have some ideas on tidying your tiny spaced dorm, or just normal rooms in general. If you have some great ideas, please let me know! Share your thoughts…

The College Experience

[24/30]

Hey Humans!
Back when I was in high school, I used to long for what it feels like to live a university student’s life. Now that I am a university student, I can finally share what it feels like for those who wants to be in university, or is in university, or has gone through university life. Honestly, what I think? What I thought? I just long for holidays now…

University is very fun. It’s much more free than in high school. You get more down time for yourself. But honestly it depends on what you choose to study and the different rules of every campus and majors. But when you really love something you’re studying, you start to realize how exciting it is. And also how you have a lot of friends who have the same excitement as you are, who has the same dreams. But of course there are ups and downs of every schools.

When I just got in I was shocked on the very first day that it turns out I have to go through tri-semester. Which means three semesters a year, less holidays, spend on a lot more money for more semesters, and no I still don’t get to graduate faster! Trust me, I’ve counted and I still graduate as fast as the normal year students. And what bummed me a lot is that I did not agree to this! I didn’t even know. I mean, if I agreed to it in the beginning I’d be alright because I chose it. And since I’m a music student, it just means I have less time to learn my repertoires.

Maybe I’m just exaggerating? I don’t know, I’m trying to get used to it. But I’m also in Music Therapy where I not only study music, I also study Psychology and Techniques. And now I’m soon going to actually start doing music therapy practice. Well, I guess it’s just for the better? I’ll just look at it in the bright way…. This is just a way of us to be prepared of the bigger, crueler world out there when we graduate university.

I’m alright though now.. But sometimes it still hits me of how annoyed I am of the program. Anyways, that’s just me. How about you? Are you going to get into college, or you’re going to college? Share your story, maybe we can relate.

Cya soon,

Syra 🙂

Staying After Goodbyes

Hey Humans!

As you may or may not know, I am now a university student. And I have been studying for a year. I miss my high school moments with my friends. What was really tough was leaving and having to find new friends. This quote was my yearbook quote, and I am so lucky to still have friends that supports me after high school. They are the people I come to when I feel lonely, and I would do the same for them.

For those of you who are still in high school, I really just want to tell you, make the most out of it! One day you’ll sit back and remember all those cocky jokes back in high school, and missing all those crazy moments you had on recess with your friends. Also the times you got to hang out while talking about the most random stuff. Once you get into university, there’s not much of that left. The best thing is to keep in touch with your mates back at home.

Who To Trust?

Hey Humans!

Who can we trust when we’re miles away from home?

Except if you’re going to a school in your hometown, in that case who can you trust as a friend? Well that question can go to anyone anywhere.. As to what I’ve been through for the last year, a lot of people have come and go in my life.

First of all, always keep in contact with your buddies from back home! They would understand you more and longer, so when you have a problem with adapting to a new place you know where to call. But never ever forget them once you have adapted and find new friends.

Now how do we pick friends? You don’t! Simply find a friend that makes you feel comfortable. Sometimes the transition from a high school student to a university student makes us feel ‘overjoy’, we can sometimes act reckless to prove ourselves ‘cool’. Just be yourself, find someone who would let you be who you are.

After a few weeks or semesters, you might have a sudden feeling of change. Whether it is your course, friends, community, anything! It can bring you to stress! Now when things get overloaded, try to take a moment to analyze what is it that is budging you. Try to take away what isn’t healthy. Like when you suddenly realize that a friend of yours only comes to you when they need you. Well then my friend, they ain’t your friend! Trust me, it is better to be alone than be with the wrong friends.

But how do you know when a ‘friend’ is not a friend? An obvious clue is they come to you when they ask about class or assignments, but they never talk or come to you to hang out or joke around. Not that you’re not trying, they just don’t think of you. Second is when you’re in a really busy state and they don’t support you. Third is when they don’t ask where you are when you don’t come into class, and they don’t even care when you’re sick.

So trust someone who would make you laugh and someone you would joke or talk to without making you think hard to please that person. If you feel like you still haven’t adapted, it is fine. For those people who uses you, trust me one day you’ll become a great independent person! Just focus on becoming the best person you can be on your chosen study.

Lazy Yummy Breaky

Good Morning Humans!

Time to prepare your breakfast. Oh I know I know… It’s so early, you had a long day yesterday and you need more sleep. But trust me, you will never get enough sleep! Better get your butt off your bed, wash your face, and have a refreshing breakfast. But what? Breakfasts are a waste of time??? True. But remember this, not having breakfast is also a waste of your whole day! Which one do you prefer?

I can totally connect to those who wakes up every morning, get ready for school of university, and you have to live on your own. You’re just lazy for breakfast, but hey! I’m here to help you, and also myself. Here’s a very easy breakfast  you can make.

JpegPrepare fruits, just anything really. Apples, strawberries, banana, orange, you name it! Cut them out.. My trick is I cut mine the night before and I store them in a tight lock container and put it in the fridge. You’ll have nice cold cut fruits in the morning. I know some may say ‘the nutrients’ thin out when cut and stored, but I believe storing it in a tight lock container straight away in the fridge for a night wouldn’t lose that much nutrients. You can even add in vegetables! There’s nothing wrong with that. I put in some extra cherry tomatoes, yummy!

Pour yogurt in your bowl! Any yogurt is possible. I used the liquid drinking type, simply because I had no other yogurts. Adding greek yogurt would be amazing! I would definitely go for plain yogurts, nothing is better than that.

This next step is totally however you want it. But I put in a bit of cereal. You can add oat meal, almonds, anything you want! Boost your energy with extra carbohydrates and proteins, nothing can go wring with that. And for extra kick of taste, I sprinkled honey around. And voila! Lazy Yummy Breaky.

I Made It! Monday

Hey Humans!

So it’s Monday… I know for some of you it’s one of those days where you just want to pull up your blankets when you hear the alarm ring, or it’s an exciting day because you get to see a good friend or your crush. I’m going to take part in a challenge (for the first time!) called ‘I made it! Monday‘. Simple, I will share my story of the week.

To me, this monday is a great monday to start off the week because I’m on holidays! I live in Indonesia, we don’t have a thing called ‘spring break’. So why am I on holidays? I just finished my 2nd Semester of university because I’m in the accelerated program (3 semesters a year, my 1st semester started last year). Just FYI, I’m studying music therapy under the Conservatory of Music. My final exams was last week, and it was one my most hectic weeks!

Last week was frightening. It felt like I just learnt a chapter, then suddenly I’m on a desk working on a 6 chapter final exam. I know I’m exaggerating, but that was how I felt. I play the violin, so every semester my final exams would be playing in front of the string department juries. Last week I had to play in front of 5 juries, 6 songs memorized in 3 months, and I had 3 pianists to help accompany the pieces. One of my pianist was only informed 2 weeks before the exam, and he had to play 3 songs! I had to find another pianist, because my other pianists has already gotten the longest songs, whereas these 3 songs are just short pieces. But never underestimate short pieces, because the piano part was really tricky. 1 week before the exam my new pianist had to go home out of town for 5 days, which left me nervous! The last time we played we still had major mistakes, and the next time we could practice again was the day before the final exam! Just great. But we managed to get them done just the day before the exam.

In the exam room, it was a ‘now or never’ moment. It was the only moment where I could prove them I had progress. I remember on my 1st semester final exam, I screwed up big time! I stopped in the middle of a piece. So this time I was very nervous when I walked in the room. The room was dark with only a spotlight on the violinist. I did a few minor mistakes, but I just kept going. I told my self to relax, drop shoulder, and breath. There was a moment where I closed my eyes and imagined myself playing in a forest on autumn (because the song is called ‘Autumnal Forest’). Everything went well, even the 3 songs with my new pianist.

I managed to complete my week in a whole piece. I did not regret a day of last week. The highlight of my week was a few moments after I got out of my violin final exams, I saw my violin lecturer (which was one of the juries). I was nervous to see her but she was smiling with her signature smile and she opened her arms and gave me a hug. I did not expect that at all, so I gave her an awkward ‘not ready’ hug and she said “you had progressed”. I just smiled back and said “thank you”, then she had to go to the toilet. I was so happy, and yes I have felt so much progress. Every hard work of mine was worth it. At that moment I realized that and took a moment to be proud of myself.

My lesson of the week? Just work your butt off, no matter how tiring it is. I knew I could have done more, but I did what I could. It took me a few sacrifices to get there, but in the end you will know that was all worth it.

Syra 🙂
